The civil registers from 1811-1875 for Bremen City and the rural communities of Bremen The civil registration of births, marriages and deaths was introduced by the French government during the French occupation of Bremen from 1806. With effect from 20.08.1811, the creation of civil registers was prescribed. This was maintained even after the liberation of Bremen in 1813 and continued until 31.12.1875 after the introduction of the registry offices.

In order to simplify the use of the civil register, a large group of MAUS members created this alphabetical index. It should be noted that in the early years of the civil registers, the labeling of entries was very inconsistent. In most cases, they were not given register numbers, but only the page numbers. As a result, the labeling of the records in the register also varies according to type (births, marriages, deaths), municipality and time period. Pages are given up to 1814, thereafter mostly register numbers. The deaths are an exception. Here the page numbers are given throughout.
